What is the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test? 

The TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is one of the top English teaching qualifications for educators teaching English to speakers of other languages, offered by Cambridge through the British Council.  

This exam for English teachers consists of a flexible series of modular teaching qualifications designed to test your knowledge in specific areas of English language teaching.

What TKT modules are available?  

Exam structure  

TKT test is divided into three core modules and two specialist modules. Each module lasts 80 minutes and consists of 80 objective questions (matching and multiple-choice). You can take them individually or in any combination.  
  
Core modules 1–3 
A test of knowledge about the principles and practice of English language teaching. 
  • TKT Module 1: Language and background to language learning. 
  • TKT Module 2: Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching. 
  • TKT Module 3: Managing the teaching and learning process. 
Specialist modules 

An introduction to specialist areas of English language teaching: 

  • TKT Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL): For teachers working in bilingual contexts.
  • TKT Young Learners (YL): Specifically for those teaching children aged 6–12.

TKT results and certificates 

Results for the TKT exam are typically available four to six weeks after the test date. 
  
There is no "Pass" or "Fail"; results are reported in Bands (1 to 4), with Band 3 and 4 representing "depth of knowledge" and "extensive knowledge" respectively. 
  
You will receive a separate TKT certificate for each module you complete.
